Would I be a traitor if I didn’t say my home town? You can arrive from London by train. We have lovely beaches, but don’t swim near the pier or the rocks because of the tides and currents. Maybe stick to life-guarded beaches; leave your pool inflatables at home (they are dangerous in the sea). Take a walk from Clacton to Walton, visiting Holland on Sea and Frinton on the way or go the other way to take in the Martello Towers, Martello Towers in Essex – Martello Towers (see if you can spot our famously neglected old coastguard tower that I’ve written about before and that has been the subject of vindictive action rather than a plan for restoration), Jaywick and St Osyth beach, Lea over Sands. There’s an open-top bus Clacton, on-Sea – Bus Times or a little road train that goes along by the Pier.
I saw some tourists playing ball near the Pier, and I thought maybe they don’t know about EastCliff playground or Vista Road playground; there’s much more room there if you’re here to play a ball game and nice long benches now to sit and watch and a few more trees that don’t yet provide much shade.
Watch out for the ridiculous taxi drivers who seem to have suddenly decided it’s fine to do a U-turn on Marine Parade. That and people stepping out in front of cyclists.
I’ve done a bit of travelling in my time, and the thing you might notice if you are coming from outside the UK that is a bit different here is we don’t water public grass, don’t seem to have many cooling fountains. So at the moment the grass is like straw. So whether you’re local or from further afield maybe leave your disposable BBQ at home. You might wonder why we aren’t using grey water; is that what we used to have in the fountains? It’s a reasonable question to ask. I don’t know.
